Veterans best at helping other veterans in new peer to peer support program

TOWNSVILLE  (Australia) veterans in a pilot support program: The peer-to-peer program trains veterans with experience of mental illness to be mentors to other veterans.

“We know that veterans experiencing mental health issues who feel supported during treatment are more likely to make a complete recovery,”

Townsville is one of two centres hosting the 12-month program.

The first course had 16 participants, with the second course to begin next month.

“We find people are getting more out of that intimate relationship, and the training is giving people the tools to be better mentors and overall better people,” he said.

The Government is also developing a Suicide Prevention Trial Site in Townsville.
