Location: European Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring, Leeuwarden, NLOn 10th and 11th May, a Short Course is offered to practitioners and researchers. This Short Course is lead by prof. Jean Rhodes and includes best practices from different mentoring programmes and research in Europe. The event is organized by the European Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring in collaboration with KiPa Berlin, DE (Netzwerk Berliner Kinderpatenschaften). The Short Course will cover three major areas of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of youth mentoring:

1. Latest research
2. Elements of effective practice
3. Evaluation 101

Topics of the Short Course

The three major areas of the Short Course are:

1. Latest research
Researchers at the Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring have recently completed several major studies, including a meta-analysis that have direct implications for improving mentoring service and advancing research agendas in Europe. The short course will provide interesting, accessible overviews of the latest findings from these and other important new research.

2. Elements of effective practice
The recently-released “Elements of Effective Practice,” is a set of research- and safety-informed practices that can ensure that youth mentoring programs are as effective and safe as possible. As co-author of this set of guidelines, Professor Rhodes is well-positioned to discuss the rationale for each standard and benchmark and how programs can ensure that they are adhering to evidence-based practice. The short course will include examples and discussions of each practice in ways that expand it’s reach and implications to programs beyond the US.

3. Evaluation 101
Drawing on case studies from Europe and the US, Rhodes will discuss the various approaches to program evaluation and strategies that programs can use for simple and effective assessment. We will discuss the strengths, choices, and limitations of various evaluation designs, questionnaires and interview protocols that can be used, and how best accurately and effectively to communicate findings to various audiences.
